How TroutSpy works
TroutSpy is a decision aid for anglers. It combines forecast signals that can influence trout activity and fishing practicality, then turns them into a consistent starting plan.
What the score uses
The current engine considers air temperature, wind speed and gusts, cloud cover, rain, atmospheric pressure trend and time of day. Each signal adjusts a 0–100 fishing score. No single variable is treated as magic.
What the score does not know
It does not know a measured water temperature, stocking pattern, insect hatch, exact fish location, angling pressure, water clarity or local access conditions unless those are added as future inputs. TroutSpy can show a clearly labelled estimated surface-water temperature based on season, latitude and the local air forecast, but that modelled range is not a sensor reading. That is why TroutSpy describes a starting depth, method and retrieve rather than claiming certainty.
Shoreline is not assumed
When mapped water geometry is available, TroutSpy samples the whole water, consolidates mapped positions into shoreline and interior open-water analysis zones, and compares them using current plus near-term forecast conditions. Warm or bright conditions can push open-water or deeper-water zones above the bank in the ranking. The pins are search zones, not detections of fish or claims about exact bathymetry.
Confidence is separate from opportunity
The fishing opportunity score estimates how favourable the forecast looks. The confidence percentage instead reflects how complete the inputs are. TroutSpy deliberately limits confidence when water temperature, bathymetry or sufficient catch history are unavailable.
Free and Pro experience
The free TroutSpy experience may be supported by advertising. TroutSpy Pro is ad-free: once Pro access is verified, TroutSpy does not load the Google AdSense advertising script on the main planning page.
Catch log and continuous improvement
TroutSpy Pro includes an account-linked catch log for results, species, depth, method, retrieve, fly/lure and notes. The current release stores those records in TroutSpy's Cloudflare D1 database so they can follow the signed-in user across devices, but it does not yet change the forecast from them. Future personalisation should only adjust model weights after enough observations exist to avoid overreacting to one catch.
