Trout fishing in rain: read the whole weather change
Trout fishing in rain can be excellent, poor or unsafe depending on what the rain changes. Light levels, water temperature, runoff, clarity, wind and inflows often matter more than the fact that rain is falling.
Why light rain can change a session
Cloud and rain can reduce harsh light and change surface activity. On some stillwaters, cooler wet weather after a hot spell can improve conditions. On others, cold rain, coloured inflows or rapidly changing water can make fish harder to locate.
Rain after warm weather
A cooler weather system can lower air temperature, increase cloud and sometimes help surface water begin to cool. The lake will not instantly match the air temperature, especially on large reservoirs, so think in terms of a changing trend rather than an immediate reset.
Heavy rain and runoff
Runoff can affect clarity, access and local inflows. On reservoirs, coloured water can be very localised. If visibility drops, presentation and location may need to change. If banks, paths or parking areas become unsafe, the correct decision is to move or stop.
